My five days in Breck were wonderful with clear, crisp, and sunny weather but it had to come to an end a I set my alarm for the first in a week and woke early to clean the house and roll out to Georgetown to catch my bus to Crested Butte (CB) . For RtR the riders that choose to camp are authorized a "generous" 70 lbs in one duffle because they schlep it from town to town while you are riding.
I packed by bag and when ready to put it in the car it was just too heavy. Whether or not is was overweight is irrelevant I just could not imagine hauling from a truck to the campsite and back each day. Thus I had to triage my kit and pulled whatever I did think I would need. In the end I had 6 plastic bags of daily riding kit,1 bag of t-shirts and trou, 2 towels, pair of jeans, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, laptop (at least 7 lbs), and a sack of tubes and minor repair tools..........................it was still godawful heavy. :(
After the load-up in G Town the bus ride to CB was about 3.5 hours and leisurely and scenic.
Upon arrival with 3 other buses and the hundreds of riders already there I schlepped by duffle to the CB High School football field and then checked-in.
Tent City at CB High School
After check-in I pitched my tent and waited for my bike to arrive which came on a separate truck. I put it together in about 15 min and then went for a quick spin to see it was in working order and the drivetrain was making some noise. One of the wonderful things about RtR is that is a HUGE deal and numerous vendors show-up to let you demo equipment and provide free services. In this case I went to the Shimano tent and Ryan the wrench tweaked my drivetrain and gave me some free maintenance guidance at the same time. I asked him what the Shimano position was on my after market jockey wheels and he responded "I will never say anything bad about another company's product but at Shimano we recommend you use our jockey wheels"
Vendor and Demo Village
Well............I decided to keep my jockey wheels (they are red and pimp the bike) and went for a spin and it has not been this quiet since it was new!!
RtR Beer Garden in CB
Downtown CB pulled out all the stops for RtR
Some Local Rock n Roll in the Beer Garden
After sampling a O'Dell's Amber in the Beer Garden I met Rick Oshlo and some of his cycling pals at a superb pizza place called Secret Stash (http://www.thesecretstash.com/) for dinner and Fat Tire adult beverages. Great pizza and talking about bikes and cycling........what a way to wind down the day.
JOCMO: Several......having a biked tuned by Shimano and the enthusiasm of having several thousand people being embraced by the CB community.
