Roadtrip to Breck--Mileage count 297

Leaving the Springs to head to Breck for the next 5 days was a bit depressing. After about 10 days with my sister and her family there always seemed to be something to do or someone to talk or laugh with. Not having a family of my own I live vicariously through my sister's families and relish the time I can spend with their kids.

After loading up all my gear I made a stop at COSTCO so I could have something to eat while in the mountains and was on my way......................
 A Few Miles from Breckenridge

Day 2 in Breck was my welcome to some real altitude (9600') and I was feeling the effects. Caffeine did not help but a couple of Aleve did! After leisurely reading for a while in the morning I ran an errand to the local hardware store for some polyurethane so I could refinish the deck chairs....i have to earn my keep up here...so I spent the afternoon working on the chairs before taking off for a 90 min MTB ride up the Boreas Pass Road.....

Well.............as expected the road is closed about a half way up because most of the road is still covered in snow and rock fall that won't be cleared for another month.....and it was foot, snowshoe, or MTB only....I was able to ride to about the 10800' point where the road was all snow so I turned around and enjoyed the long descent. It sure is amazing what endorphins can do to ward off the effects of altitude but they didn't help me last week in Gunnison!

A few days later I was invited to dinner at the home of Rick and Pam Oshlo. I met Rick via Coach Patrick and was informed that Rick has ridden "more of the Colorado Roads than anyone" and as a 5 time finisher of Ride the Rockies (RtR) and a member of the Carmichael Training Systems team that rode the complete Tour of California course a few hours ahead of the pro peloton. What a great evening of Fat Tire Amber and listening to his wonderful cycling experiences and assessing when in your life you determine you are living to work or working to live!!

Rick is signed up for RtR again and I will see him in a few days when we start in Crested Butte. Check out some of Rick's photos at http://www.oshlo.net/cycling/
